How do you turn off check engine light on 1996 toyota Avalon XLS?

How do I get rid of check engine light on a 1996 Toyota Avalon XLS myself (without spending $$), the light is there for a year, i showed it to a mechanic, he said its not a big deal. Now i m planning to sell this car and want to get rid of this the light (atleast for a month) before i show it to potential buyers.|||usually if u unhook the positive battery cable this will clear any codes, but if there is a promblem it will just come back on again|||I had something similar CHECK ENGINE LIGHT occur on a SIENNA XLE when traveling out of state. First I thought it was air pressure in tires, then I checked oil and the level was fine (no leaks). I wouldn't mind if it was local bec my mechanic is expert and I kept looking at owner's manual explanation of codes covering 3 pages. Anyway we stopped for lunch and then I went and filled up my tank. Guess what? Sure enough owner's manual was correct that my last stop for gas I did not secure %26amp; turn tight it enough.

FYI in our state emissions testing, they do test "gas cap" but maybe you own two Toyotas or have access to a friend's, bec otherwise this hunch might costs you $10 or more. Maybe you lost or left your Toyota gas cap and did not replace it with a genuine one?

Hope the Above Info might help!|||Bring the car to another mechanic. Toyotas are chronic for engine problems if you do not follow their maintenance book to the tee on oil changes and such. I have have had two Camrys, both 1996. Both had those lights go off, and both had engine problems.|||To get rid the engine light itself is easy, you can either unplug the battery cable or the EFI fuse for few minutes. By doing that you will reset the codes however. This is also not a permanent solution, the light will come back on in a few days if you have a "real" problem.

Assuming that your gas cap is tighten up properly (min 3 clicks) most likely you have something else more serious. Most common thing is the O2 sensors which there are 3 of them on yr type of vehicle.

Engine check light is an indicator to tell you that there's something wrong with your emission. Now the problem could be various from just a loose gas cap to the severe one which would cost you a bundle.

Since you're planning to sell the car, I would try to be as honestly possible to the prospected buyer. You could go to an auto parts store and have them check what's going on by pulling the code. Some charge some will do it for free, call to check before hand. Once you know what's wrong it's your decision to either fore go to replace or tell your buyer that there is an existing problem that s/he should be aware of by showing s/he the diagnostic report. At least that what I would do if I were in your position.|||Sorry, sounds like you are trying to be dishonest and give your problems to someone else. The best way is get it diagnosed, fix it and the light will be off. OR let it stay on and inform potential buyers that the car comes as is and you don't know what is wrong with it.|||ungplug would be simplest..lol..but most auto part stores have scan tools..and usually you can turn them off from the scan tool
